Kimai is a free open source time tracker allow you to track the work time and prints out a summary of your activities on demand. Yearly, monthly, daily, by customer, by project, by action …

It’s simplicity is its strength. Due to Kimai’s web browser based interface it runs cross-platform. Likewise you can install it as a web service or as a single-user program on your local workstation.

“While there are many programs one can use for time and project tracking, they tend to be overkill for my rather simple needs. Kimai came about because I was tired to feed lame boring excel tables …”

Kimai does not have to run to do the recording. You can even quit your browser. Your time is still recording until you stop it from any web browser that has access to your installment. It is designed to hold lots of users but you can use it for a single user if you need to.

Kimai is localized in more than 15 languages, for example English, German, Dutch, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and many more. Feel free to send your self-made language files! Not all localizations are complete – we’re still looking for translators!

You can also send us your own skin designs (find instructions in the ‘skins’ directory). We will also have some skins available in the future.

How to Install Kimai on Linux

Kimai is a time tracker app for the web based so you have to pass the following requirements must be met on the server installation:
  1. PHP version 5.2 or above
  2. MySQL libraries for PHP
  3. one MySQL database (as Kimai supports table prefixes, this database may be shared with other tools)
  4. FTP or shell access to set the correct files ystem permissions.
Extract the Kimai release zip/tarball into a server directory accessible from the outside and navigate to this location using a modern Web browser. A step-by-step installation program is included with every new release of Kimai. Follow the instructions of the installer and correct missing or incorrect permissions using your FTP or shell account. If the step-by-step installer does not work, please report this error using the support forum.

Remove the “install” directory after the installation! After you removed the “install” directory you may login into Kimai using the following credentials:
user: admin
password: changeme

Set the administrator password using the setting dialog. Keeping “changeme” as your password is a security hole! As Kimai forbids multiple sessions for the same user, the previously logged-in user will be logged out, if another login occurs for that account.
